While extracting a strange object out of Peru, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents are taken hostage aboard their plane.
Skye is now integrated into Coulson's team as a consultant. Their next assignment is in Peru, tracking a "0-8-4", a S.H.I.E.L.D. prefix for "an object of unknown origin". Once there, the team quickly realizes that the object is actually a piece of forgotten HYDRA technology powered by Tesseract energy. Coulson meets with a former ally, Camilla Reyes and brings her onboard the team plane. Later, Reyes betrays Coulson and plans to take the HYDRA weapon for herself so she can take over Peru. The squabbling team members band together, utilizing each of their talents, and save the day. Skye receives a text message from another member of the Rising Tide and confirms her allegiance to them. Afterwards, Director Nick Fury scolds Coulson for the damage to the plane, and warns him about the risk Skye poses.
Here be spoilers...
After a fun premiere episode, 0-8-4 suffered badly from the sophomore slump. Descending quickly into macguffin of the week territory, we travel to the Universal back lot, I mean Peru, to find something loosely linked with Marvel lore so we'll give a damn. But...we don't. Not really.
The action was funish, and there was plenty of it, but when bullets aren't flying and punches aren't being thrown there's not much there. The cast, Coulson aside, are ciphers.
The two experienced agents - May and Ward - are the worst offenders. I have a hard time believing Ming-Na Wen can kick butt and frowning/scowling isn't character. Ward is the blandest of bland TV heroes. And his forced "togetherness" with Skye made me cringe. Quicksilver could rub those two together and there still wouldn't be any sparks.
And speaking of Skye - the smart, sassy, but vulnerable hacker - feels like a cutout from Buffy, but lacks any of the depth. Slack-cutting time - it is only the second episode, but so far I'm not getting anything from her or her castmates. Fitz and Simmons are cute, but nothing more than shtick. If it weren't for Clark Gregg (who I love), I probably would have turned off this episode.
From the super-fake jungle (A-Team flashbacks anyone?), to the ridiculous Camilla Reyes (the Peruvian army tailor did a fine job on her uniform though) to the life raft, everything felt fake and cartoonish. And not in a fun way.
I understand the need to have macguffins of the week and for the forced team-building episode, but the when the team itself is this bland, I just have trouble mustering up enough energy to care.
I love Marvel. I love Joss. I love Coulson. I'll stick around, but I'm disappointed so far. There's such potential here, but so far so meh. This is like the Troll 2 or The Room of television. The acting is wrong, the writing is wrong, the effects are wrong. But through all of it going wrong they manage to make such a beautiful product that is making me tune in because I find it entertaining... Just for all the wrong reasons.
The plot of this episode is that the Agents of SHIELD (who are nothing but characters recycled from other TV shows) are investigating an 0-8-4. What is an 0-8-4? A U.F.O. Why didn't they use that terminology? But I digress. They find the UFO in an archaeological dig. It is over 500 years old, powered by the tesseract and (get this) seems to have German engineering. Think that's funny? I haven't even started to go into the hilarity yet.
So Coulson meets a woman from his past (Can we have an explanation for why he survived being STABBED THROUGH THE HEART IN THE AVENGERS? Because that isn't explained) and they decide to work together at the drop of a hat. They go onto the plane they arrived in and it turns out that the woman is an enemy. The team then begins to be knocked out and tied up, they then break out and use a robot to blow a hole in the ship where Coulson is tied up. What's their reaction? "He can handle himself." Do you see why this is funny yet? After walking onto the part of the ship with the hole in it (??????????) they seem to get everybody out except for the main bad guy and what do they do to stop the hole in the plane? An inflatable air raft plugs it... I wish I was making this up.
Everything is wrong with this show. The characters are clichéd, their chemistry is non-existent, the plots are horrible and they try and make references to the movies to make sure we know this is in continuity, the writing is dumb and... to be honest I can take internet reviewers such as The Nostalgia Critic and The Cinema Snob more seriously. No, I'm not even kidding. I can take a pretentious art-house snob on the internet reviewing Z-Grade movies more seriously. That's how funny this show is.
I mean, there have been some really good shows based on comic books such as Blade The Series and Witchblade (Yes I think Witchbade could be taken more seriously), so don't get me wrong I think something like this can be done. It's just the way they carry it out, it's laughable.
All I can say about the show is that although I have been giving this episode crap... It's actually worth a watch. It's just one of those things like The Room, Plan 9 From Outer Space and Troll 2 (No I went there I think this is on the same level) that is so enjoyably bad that it is really worth a watch. If you are entertained by this for all the right reasons then that's great! All I'm saying is that I find this entertaining for the wrong reasons.
